Editing Your Google Business Profile
0:00 How to edit your profile for your Google Business Profile. There are two options here:
- When you first set up your profile, Google will walk you through a step-by-step process to complete all the key details.
- If you’ve already done that but didn’t complete it in detail — which is common — you’ll need to manually return and update the missing information.
0:22 To edit your profile, go to your Google Business Profile dashboard and click on Edit Profile.
0:30 You must fill out every section. If not, Google is unlikely to favour your profile over your competitors’.
Key Sections to Complete
- Business Name
- Categories: Use one primary category and up to two secondary categories. Prioritise the main service your business provides.
- Description: Include key location keywords. Example: “We are a York-based plumbing service covering York and surrounding areas.”
- Phone Number
- Chat Option: Optional, but can be added if available.
- Website & Social Media Links
- Business Location: Required unless you’re a service area business.
1:21 For service area businesses, Google prefers service areas within a 2-hour radius of your base location.
1:36 For example, if you’re based in Brighton, Google is happy for you to set your service radius to up to 2 hours driving distance from that location.
Opening Hours & Consistency
1:48 Add your opening hours and double-check that they are accurate. They must match the opening hours listed on your website.
1:59 A common mistake is having inconsistent data. Google cross-checks this and will penalise profiles where the business hours or details differ across your digital assets.
2:08 For example, if your profile says you open at 9am on Saturday but your website says 11am, Google may suppress your listing.
Maintain Consistency Across Platforms
2:19 Ensure all your platforms — Google Business Profile, Instagram, your website’s contact page, and directory listings — share the same business information.
2:37 Fill in any additional hours or special details. The more complete and consistent your data is, the more likely Google will trust and show your business.
